What is ketosis?

Those who may be interested in health and nutrition issues, may have heard about ketosis, and it is becoming fashionable as there are ketogenetic diets that public figures begin to say they follow. It is a controversial issue that has on the war to those who defend low-carb diets against those who defend the opposite. I am one of the first side, but simply because in my search on how to improve my health, is what makes me better, and with more energy, so it is a personal matter to investigate what kind of food is best for you.

What is ketosis?

Ketones are chemicals that the body produces naturally as a result of fat burning, and the state of Ketosis is one in which your body uses fat instead of sugar or glucose as the main source of fuel. Ketosis appears mainly during fasting, low-carb diets, pregnancy, or it can also be caused if you suffer from diabetes (problems with sugar, one of the main “potential hazards” for the body in modern food).

This change in metabolism occurs when the body does not receive carbohydrates for a certain period of time (and they do not need to be introduced externally, since we can generate them through our own internal processes) to produce glucose and after the liver has also used all the stored glucose stored in it. Ketones are created when the fat stored in the organism is used entirety as fuel.

Why do we want to enter ketosis?

The main factor of those who seek to use ketones as an energy source is the benefit it has for the mind and the brain, which stops feeding on glucose. This translates into greater mental power and clarity, better concentration power, and an improvement in synaptic connections, etc. You have simply stopped nourishing your brain with “cheap gasoline” and now we are using rocket fuel (obviously natural and produced by the body itself). Besides of lowering the blood sugar, it has other benefits that helps the body because it use fewer resources to deal with the problems of high glucose everyone ingests daily (almost all products have a little added sugar, even those products that you would never believe they could have it-> start looking at the labels of the products you buy, you’ll get surprised). Basically, it is about being in a metabolic state without carbohydrates to begin to spend the accumulated fat as fuel.

Neurological protection

In an article called “Neuroprotective and disease-modifying effects of the ketogenic diet”, a mention is made about the protection that the brain produces in the state of ketosis, alluding to a study carried out with mice. According to the article, mortality was reduced, and it was verified how neuronal protection was increased against brain damage, trauma and the loss of neurons that make up the brain cortex. It is a world that is not given publicity, among other things, because there are economic interests (large pharmaceutical and large food companies) at stake.

Another aspect to note is that ketosis is not ketoacidosis (excess of acetic bodies and acidity in the blood). There are two types of ketoacidosis: Diabetic (which is due to the simultaneous increase of glucose and acidity in the blood) and the alcoholic (which is due to the excessive consumption of alcohol without taking food). If you don’t belong to any of those groups, your body must have the ability to keep the ketones production in order. The ketones are produced daily and are part of the system that uses the body to survive.

Like everything, read and research, make changes and see if there is an improvement, adapt your way of life and eating style to what benefits to you. The saying “mens sana in corpore sano” has much to do here and going beyond, it is better to say “a soul in the process of growth in a physical vehicle with all its potential at your service”.
